If you're visting South Lake Tahoe this is a good hike with easy access. It took me 1.5 hours to get up and on the air - then .75 hours to return. From the South Lake Tahoe area follow Lake Tahoe Boulevard west, cross US50 and turn left on Sawmill Road (just past Sawmill Pond). Just to your left turn into the parking area at Sawmill Pond. If you're driving into South Lake Tahoe from the south on US50, turn left on Sawmill road. The parking area at Sawmill pond is on your right just before you get to Lake Tahoe Boulevard. During the winter the gate to Sawmill Pond is closed but there's ample parking before the gate. In summer the gate is open to the parking spots for the pond. Start your hike at the gate to the OHV trail just beyond the Sawmill Pond parking area - follow the main OHV trail about 1.6 miles to the top where it ends in a loop. Walk to the end of the loop, head NW at about your 10 o'clock and begin "bushwacking" your way to the top. The summit is marked with a tattered american flag secured to a steel mast. During summer months the OHV trail is open so using appropriate transportation you could ride to the "loop" and hike the last .2 miles to the summit. Winter snow would make this a great snow shoe hike - there was a little snow on the trail today, not enough for snow shoe'ing but I still managed ample contacts (including S2S) to activate the summit and grab the extra winter bonus points!
